People and Escalators

Every morning on my way into work, I follow other people on their way in. Most are walking fairly briskly, to get where they need to go. Then, we get to an escalator. The same brisk walkers hit the escalator, and despite it being completely empty, they stop. And wait. And wait. They look impatient, tapping their foot, just itching to take that first step off the escalator to resume the brisk pace. Why they can't walk up the escalator is beyond me, but it really makes me want to shove them in the back and take that first step, like throwing your kid in the pool to force them to swim.

Remember in Japan, you had to keep to one side if you wanted to stand on the escalator, reserving the other side for the fast movers who walked up the escalator? Yay for being lazy Americans!
